~Proverbs 1:8

It is very important to have a strong godly mother and/or father figure in your life when growing as an adult.  They make life just a little bit easier being there to teach you things that they have already learned.  Teaching you how to walk, talk, dress, ride a bike or simply preparing you for the everyday struggles life has to offer.  In the same manner, they should also be a very important part of our spiritual growth; becoming a mature Christian.  Proverbs 1:8 states:  “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.”  God commands and wants us to learn from the wise, learn from our elders, and not depart from it.  Remember, if God did not think this was important He would not have told us to do so.  God knows what is best for us.

2 Timothy 1:2-5
2 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.”

The apostle Paul is writing a letter to Timothy thanking him for his dedication and service for Christ. But if you read closely to verse 5, he is also reminding him of where his dedication came from.  Timothy was taught the word of God at a very young age, and as he grew older what he learned from his grandmother and mother helped him to become a strong servant of God.  God places the wise, the elders in our life to help us and prepare us to do mighty things, in His name.  These things can only be accomplished with a wise mind.

Something to think about:  But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ~2 Timothy 3:14-15
